Departing from Saumur, Saumur, 3 cycling loops take you in Anjou to discover from Angers, of the Royal Abbey of Fontevraud and the amazing castle of Breze. Between small secondary roads and cycle paths, you cycle along the Loire which offers sumptuous landscapes punctuated by charming villages with their small ports and tuffa stone houses. The variety of itineraries also includes the Saumur-Champigny vineyard and the remarkable troglodyte sites by Turquant and Souzay-Champigny.

Day 1: Saumur - Trélazé - Angers

58 km

Departure from Saumur and heading for Angers for this first day of cycling. You leave the city by the banks of the Loire and walk past the cellars of the great wine houses of Saumur.

Then you cycle along the river on quiet little roads punctuated by a succession of charming villages with their beautiful churches, their tuffa stone houses and their small ports where the traditional boats of the Loire navy anchor. A spectacular cycling route !

At the gates of Angers, cross the chain ferry of the Authion river, and enter the Slate Quarries Park (parc des Ardoisières)The site of this former slate quarry, now returned to nature, offers an exceptional and unusual setting for the last few kilometres of cycling of the day.

Day 2: Angers - Bouchemaine - Saumur

Take advantage of your morning to explore the the historic center of Angers and visit the Castle of the Dukes of Anjou. It houses the fabulous Apocalypse Tapestry, a 100-meter-long masterpiece of the Middle Ages, unique in the world!

Return to Saumur in two stages: by bike you follow the cycle path along the Maine river up to the village of Bouchemaine and its beautiful riverside bourgeois houses. Then you return to the Loire for a superb ride mainly on a cycle path: charming gardens overlooking the river, guinguettes and small Loire villages, peaceful meadows. A route that invites you to stroll!

Day 3: Saumur - Fontevraud - Saumur

43km

Departing from Saumur, this one-day cycle loop upstream of the Loire will delight lovers of gastronomy, oenology and heritage.
The route takes you up the hillside where you cycle through the heart of the Saumur Champigny vineyard, offering panoramic views of the Loire Valley. Then head for theRoyal Abbey of Fontevraud, reputed to be the largest monastic city in Europe. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with 900 years of history, it is home to the recumbent statues of Eleanor of Aquitaine, Henry II Plantagenet and Richard the Lionheart.
Return to Saumur along the banks of the Loire. You will discover the villages of Candes-Saint-Martin and Montsoreau, classified as some of the Most Beautiful Villages in France and pedal along troglodyte sites remarkable in Souzay-Champigny and Turquant.

Day 4: Saumur - Brézé - Saumur

Another very bucolic cycling loop on the greenway of the Thouet Valley up to Brézé CastleIt is an unsusual site and well worth a visit: the castle, with its Renaissance and neo-Gothic appearance on the surface, is surrounded by dry moats that are among the deepest in Europe. It hides a network of several kilometers of underground galleries, vestiges of a turbulent Middle Ages.

Return to Saumur by bike via the other bank of the Thouet.

How to get to Saumur?

From Paris Austerlitz TER station direct or with connection to Orléans or Tours.

From Paris Montparnasse station by TGV to Tours/Saint Pierre des Corps or Angers then TER connection to Saumur.

When to arrive in Saumur?

Your stay includes a cycling stage from the first day. Your bikes must be collected in the morning at the meeting point which will be communicated in your travel diary, ideally between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. You will be able to fully enjoy your day.
If you benefit from the baggage transfer service, you will be asked to drop it off at our partner storage facility before 9:00 a.m.

Cycle tours

  • The bikes

    We work with cycle professionals whose comfortable and robust bikes are renewed, maintained and serviced regularly. Each bike is equipped with a handlebar bag, a rear bag (15 or 20 liters) and a helmet. We provide smartphone support and repair kit per reservation. We provide breakdown assistance on all our rental bikes.

    Your stay includes the rental of a VTC (all-road bike) adapted to your size or that of your child.

    You have the option of opting for a electric bike. With an average range of 80 kilometers, the electric bike allows you to enjoy each stage with ease, whatever the distance and elevation. Note that this type of bike requires a minimum height of 1m55 and maximum of 1m90. 

    For children, we offer a wide range of solutions depending on their age: child seat, child trailer, follower bike, follow-me system.

    The terms and conditions for collecting and returning your bike are communicated in the travel diary.

    You can also come with your own bike. Please note that in this case, you will not be able to benefit from breakdown assistance, will not be able to rent accessories and the possible repatriation of your bike to the starting point will have to be organized by you yourself.

  • Baggage transfer from one stage to another

    If you have requested baggage transfer or if the service is already included in your package, you are asked to drop it off each morning at the reception of your accommodation, before 9:00 a.m. They are delivered to you during the day, before 6:00 p.m., to your next accommodation.

  • The travel diary

    Before your departure, you will receive a travel diary containing all the information useful to your stay:

    • The detailed program of your trip, day by day (meeting time and address on the first day, accommodation details, useful addresses, points of interest, etc.).
    • Connection to our GPS application during your trip (step-by-step route, points of interest and practical information).
    • Exchange vouchers.
    • Tourist information and advice for cycling with complete peace of mind.
    • A support number.
  • What to do cycling at the end of your stay?

    We organize the repatriation of all bicycles rented with Trip à Vélo during our roaming stays. For loop or star stays, the bikes are returned by you to partner establishments. In all cases, the drop-off address will be communicated to you in the travel diary.

    If you came with your own bike, any repatriation must be organized by you. Regional TERs accept bicycles on board (see the conditions on the SNCF website: www.sncf.com ).

  • How to return to the city of departure?

    If you have to return to the city of departure, the return must be organized by you. 

    By train: numerous TER trains serve the cities of Orléans, Blois, Onzain, Amboise, Tours and Saumur at a high daily frequency during the season. You can already consult the SNCF website: www.sncf.com. You will also find more information on timetables in your travel diary. 

    At your request, we can organize a taxi transfer (surcharge).
