Day 1: Saumur - Fontevraud through the vineyards

22 km

Saumur is the starting point of your stay. Also called “Saumur la Blanche”, the town owes its nickname to the tuffeau stone which shapes its buildings, including its emblematic castle, majestically erected on a rocky outcrop.

After a few pedal strokes to climb up to the castle and on the hillside, here is the famous Saumur Champigny vineyard! You meander through the vineyards which stretch as far as the eye can see. Along the way, the small isolated church of Parnay offers a panoramic view of the Loire.

The bike route continues to Fontevraud. The Royal Abbey, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is recognized as the largest monastic city in Europe. Take advantage of your afternoon to explore this exceptional collection of religious art, its eventful history and discover the moving recumbent figures of the Plantagenets, from Eleanor of Aquitaine to Richard the Lionheart.

Day 2: Fontevraud - Saumur via the Loire

23km

During this second day of cycling you explore the unusual and fascinating world of troglodytes. In Turquant, meet craftsmen and winegrowers installed in the cavities dug in the tuffeau and visit the museum of taped apples. In Souzay-Champigny, follow the route by bike through the heart of the troglodytes.

Along the Loire, classified among the Most Beautiful Villages in France, you discover the picturesque villages of Candes-Saint-Martin and Montsoreau. On the program: panoramic view of the confluence of the Loire and the Vienne, beautiful collegiate church with Plantagenêt Gothic architecture, medieval streets and castle overlooking the Loire.
